EU WINE LABELING REGULATION 753/2002

Considering the unilateral action and lack of response by the EU to the concerns raised by WWTG members and others, this industry group requests the WWTG governments immediately issue a joint letter demanding that the EU postpone enforcement of EC Regulation 753-2002 with respect to third country wines until the regulation is substantially amended to be consistent with WTO obligations.

APEC

The industry group urges the governments to support the work of the industry group in developing a winemaking standard for recommendation to APEC as part of the APEC developmental agenda and extending the MAA and Labeling agreement to the APEC member economies.

Recognizing that Chile is the host of the next APEC ministerial in 2004, we urge that Chile´s government work with WWTG members of APEC in furthering our principles for the free trade in wine embodied in the WWTG agreements within APEC.

JAPAN

Japanese food regulations do not authorize a full range of internationally accepted processing aids and additives for winemaking, thus creating obstacles to trade. The Australian industry and government, in conjunction with the US industry, have prepared a technical dossier and submission to the Japanese government to gain approval for such processing aids and additives. We are seeking the active support of all WWTG member governments for this initiative.

We also encourage our governments to seek the EU Commission´s support for this initiative.

ALLERGEN LABELING FOR WINE

Several countries, including WWTG member countries, have introduced or are considering the introduction of labeling for potential allergens including, inter alia, fish, milk and egg products. The WWTG industry group recommends that any such labeling must be based on sound science.

To date the scientific community has no evidence on the allergenic affects of these products in wine. Australia is currently undertaking extensive research in this area. Therefore, the WWTG industry group urges the WWTG governments to take full account of the scientific findings, expected within 12 months, in formulating or revising their labeling regulations in this area.

WTO ACCESSIONS

The WWTG industry group is deeply concerned by attempts to establish a link between the Harmonized Tariff System and Geographic Indications. We urge the WTTG governments to jointly and publicly state their strong opposition to such a link.
